Dear Parents and Students of Third Grade,
We are excited about science this year.  This year we will be having students work in a life science journal.  We will be using a composition book for this.  You will notice it is divided in half.  The first half will be for science the second for Social Studies.  Unit A will begin August 25th and run through October 16th.   This journal will be checked every two weeks on a Friday.  Students must complete that objective for that week listed below.  They will be graded on what they have completed in their journal for that particular objective. Please use language and terms that your child understands.  This project is meant as an extension of science.  Please have your child complete it on their own.  The concepts will follow our lesson plans online and will follow the main concepts taught in our science book.  Students are expected to use correct spelling and complete sentences. We encourage them to find more information on the internet and additional books. The schedule is as follows:

Week 1 Due Wednesday September 16th.  Choose two livings things (plants or animals) tell how they are alike.  Include a picture either drawn, taken with a camera or a magazine picture.
OR

What do Plants Need? Choose a plant, name the parts and tell how those parts provide what the plants need.  Draw or take picture and describe.

Week 2 Due Wednesday September 30th. Choose a flowering plant and a conifer plant.  Show the life cycle of both, label and describe.  Draw or take a picture.
OR
Choose an animal and describe what it needs to live.  Explain why animals need food, water, air and shelter.  Draw a picture of the animal or take a picture.

Week 3 Due Wednesday October 14th. Choose an animal explain how an animal changes as it grows.  Identify stages of an animal’s life cycle.  Draw or take a picture of your animal.
OR
Animals have body parts that do special jobs. Choose an animal and identify parts that animals use to carry out their life activities.   Draw or take a picture.

Week 4 Due Wednesday October 28th.  Complete a trait chart provided from your teacher, with three or four animals.  Include pictures of animal either drawn or taken.

We will be giving quizzes and tests throughout the unit.  Notification of these dates will be sent home.  We will also be bringing in some special speakers.  We are looking forward to an exciting fall.

If you have any questions please let us know.
